The Humanities and the Challenges of National Development in Nigeria: A Literary Perspective

Abstract

This paper explores and evaluates the challenges that face the humanities in Nigeria from a literary perspective. It highlights the contributions of the humanities, especially literature, to the development of human, socio-cultural and economic resources of Nigeria. It concludes that in view of the fundamental importance and relevance of the humanities to national development, the Nigerian government should fund the humanistic disciplines adequately to equip them well enough to meet the challenges facing them in the 21st century.
